La Crosse firefighter uses rappel to save children's lives

LA CROSSE - A La Crosse firefighter had to rappel from the Ward Avenue Bridge to rescue two children Friday evening.

The children, aged seven and 10, were not hurt. They had become trapped in the concrete-walled waterway. Emergency responders said they didn’t know how the children had gotten in Pammel Creek in the town of Shelby.

The La Crosse Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team set up a rope system to lower the firefighter about 20 to the trapped children a little after 5:30 p.m. Friday. It was determined the safest way to get them out was to walk them to the northeast end of the creek.
