From August 17th until September 3rd, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department will be participating in a statewide effort called "Over the Limit, Under Arrest" to reduce the number of intoxicated motorists in Wisconsin. With the goal of "zero" in mind, Sheriff's deputies will be in full force performing traffic enforcement.
Statistically, as a state we are moving in the right direction with regard to alcohol related crashes and fatalities. In 2001, there were a total of 8,695 alcohol related crashes in Wisconsin with 764 fatalities. Over the span of 10 years, those numbers have fallen to 5,297 alcohol related crashes and 565 fatalities reported in 2011.
"Over the limit, Under arrest" is one of many programs the Sheriff's Department remains involved in to assist in the reduction of traffic fatalities. Alcohol related crashes are preventable. By making the decision to operate a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol those people now put themselves and the rest of the motoring public at risk.
