LA CROSSE - A 20-year-old Viroqua man is free on a signature bond, after he was found passed out in a car with a baby-on-board.
Cody Onshus is due back in La Crosse County Circuit Court next Monday on a felony charge of reckless endangerment. He’s also charged with OWI with a minor in the vehicle. Authorities said Onshus was smoking the painkiller oxycodone just before he and a passenger fell asleep at a stop sign in Onalaska last Friday. Another motorist saw the two asleep – and she reached in the car, shut off the ignition, and grabbed the one-year-old child.
Officials said Onshus was not breathing at the time, and he had turned blue. He and the passenger were taken to a hospital, while the baby was sent to the local Child Protective Services agency. At his next court appearance, a judge will decide if there’s enough evidence to order a trial in the case.
