BAYFIELD - The Red Cliff Indian tribe near Bayfield has completed its effort to recover 55-gallon barrels that the Army dumped into Lake Superior 50 years ago.
The tribe received a federal grant to recover around 70 barrels – which are believed to have munitions parts and related debris. Hundreds of barrels were dumped near Duluth-Superior from 1959-through-62, at the height of the Cold War.
The tribe worked with EMR of Duluth to pull up barrels on a random basis. The first lab data from the barrels is expected in a few weeks. And a complete report is due next spring. Officials say it could take a few months to see if the barrels caused a risk to the environment or people’s health. The Pentagon does not believe that’s the case.
