It’s not official yet, but Pierce County is very close to having a new District Attorney as challenger Sean Froelich upset incumbent John O’Boyle in Tuesday’s partisan primary election.

Froelich finished with 859 votes (59.1 percent) of the tally compared to O’Boyle’s 593 (40.8) to earn the Democratic nomination for the November 6 election.

“Most definitely it has sunk in,” Froelich said Wednesday, “But there are still a lot of things left to be accomplished.

“The biggest thing was getting my name out into the community and finding out what their needs were.” He later added, he was “humbled and honored at the same time” about the win.

There was no candidate on the Republican side, so Froelich will be running unopposed or be challenged by a write-in candidate. If he survives in November, which is expected, Froelich will take office January 1.

A voting breakdown showed Froelich won the number of precincts by a 2-1 margin (18 to 9). While the City of River Falls and its outlying townships are usually the determining factor in a County election, this time it was the Ellsworth area which gave Froelich the victory.

Within the Village of Ellsworth and the surrounding townships of Hartland, Ellsworth, Trimbelle and Trenton, Froelich had a combined 343 votes to O’Boyle’s 95. Froelich, in the Village of Ellsworth alone, had 175 votes to O’Boyle’s 43, easily the biggest margin in the 27 precincts.

“I think being in the Cheese Curd Festival parade in June and the Fire Department parade Sunday made a significant impact,” Froelich said.
