Morning State Sports Briefs: UW tabs O'Brien as starting QB
Wisconsin Sports-- Danny O’Brien won a close competition as the starting quarterback for the Wisconsin football opener against Northern Iowa on Sept. 1 in Madison.
MADISON - Danny O’Brien won a close competition as the starting quarterback for the University of Wisconsin football opener against Northern Iowa on Sept. 1 in Madison.
The coaches said it was a tough choice among the junior transfer O’Brien, senior Curt Phillips, and freshman Joel Stave. But offensive coordinator Matt Canada said O’Brien threw just one interception in the first two weeks of the Badgers’ pre-season camp – and that’s far fewer than the picks thrown by the other two. Coach Bret Bielema said he’s fortunate to have three quarterbacks who can help the Badgers win. Canada said it came down who could best take care of the ball – and O’Brien had the edge.
O’Brien started 17 games in two seasons at Maryland before a change in the coaching staff spurred him to leave and transfer to the UW.

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs has announced it will be distributing free ticket to Wisconsin veterans so they can take part in a Badgers game. The UW-Madison Athletic Department has supplied the tickets. They will be for the Salute to Veterans game on September 1st. Veterans can register to win tickets at wisvets.com through the 24th.

The UW women's soccer team continues to dominate with the first back to back opening wins in seven years, and first double shut-outs in nearly two decades. The Badgers beat South Dakota State Sunday in Madison with a 5-0 win after having beat Notre Dame in their season opener on Friday, 1-0. It was a good team effort, with seven players making the five goals and two saves. The team will attempt to make it three in a row when they head to Chicago Sunday to face Loyola.

Preseason polling by the Associated Press has Waunakee the favorite to top Wisconsin’s largest schools in the coming football season. Hartland Arrowhead was picked second and Brookfield Central and Sun Prairie tying for third. The panel of sportswriters think West De Pere will be the top team in the Medium Division, schools with enrollment of 301 to 899 students. Walworth Big Foot and Waukesha Catholic Memorial were second and third, respectively. Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs headed the list for the Small Division. Colby was picked second and Edgar third.
