Wisconsin News-- Wisconsin’s milk production had a big increase in July, while the nation’s top producer – California – had a decrease of one-percent.

Steve and Mary Brand’s heifers were moved into a 250-head capacity, multi-age heifer facility last fall. The 100-by-250-foot facility includes Jenn-Aire thermostatically controlled curtain sidewalls to provide natural ventilation for the heifers. The Brands’ 900-cow operation was featured on a UWEX dairy modernization tour Wednesday.

Wisconsin’s milk production had a big increase in July, while the nation’s top producer – California – had a decrease of one-percent.
According to new government figures, Wisconsin’s dairy cows produced 2.7 billion pounds of milk last month. That’s up a healthy 4.4 percent from the previous July.
Nationally, milk production rose seven-tenths-of-one-percent – and of the 23 major dairy states, six reported declines. Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington joined California in seeking their milk output drop.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s total dairy herd grew by seven-thousand, to just over one-and-a-quarter million head. And the average production per cow increased by 65 pounds, to 1,785.
