More space for the Ellsworth Public Library is the charge of a building committee being formed with approval from the local village board early this month.

“The board gave its approval for the committee to investigate space options,” Library Director Shelley Anderson said Thursday. “It doesn’t mean permission for a building project,” Anderson added, noting she’s pleased “it’s a start.”

The library is presently housed in the upstairs of a building originally constructed as a community hall in 1932, with its downstairs currently occupied by the local senior citizens center. The director said library officials are open to all kinds of approaches to resolving the space issue, though renovation of the existing quarters doesn’t seem to be the answer. The property is essentially landlocked; only the back (north end) of the location would accommodate an addition and that would involve sacrificing parking, already at a premium.
