Sunday State Sports Briefs: Badgers grids a week away from season opener

Wisconsin Sports

MADISON - Starting this Saturday the University of Wisconsin football team begins pursuit of their third straight Big Ten Conference championship.

If they accomplish that lofty goal, it would be the first time in school history. The Badgers are heavy favorites to win the Leaders Division title and advance to the league championship game, especially since Ohio State and Penn State are ineligible for post-season competition.

It all starts at Camp Randall next weekend. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. against Northern Iowa, a strong FCS program which has made it to the playoffs seven times in the last 11 season. The Panthers made it to the quarterfinals last year. Teams coached by Bret Bielema are 6-0 against FCS opponents.

Published reports out of Chicago indicate the Bears are taking a closer look at the possibility of signing former Packer safety Charlie Peprah. The Bears are waiting to have Peprah’s knee checked out before signing him. Injured have knocked two back up players out of action, leaving Coach Lovie Smith’s team thin in the defensive backfield. Peprah failed his team physical at the start of training camp and Green Bay released him. He had undergone arthroscopic knee surgery in the off-season.
