D.A.R.E. gets donation from Fairmont Minerals

HAGER CITY -- Steve Albarado has said more than once in his previous four years as Pierce County Sheriff’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer, his budget is only $1,000, so he tries to spread it out as best he can.
When DARE announced a new curriculum would be introduced for the upcoming school year, Albarado had to do something he has only done once before--ask for donations.
Luckily, there was a local county business willing to take his cause.
Fairmont Minerals – Wisconsin Industrial Sand Company (WISC) donated $2,000 so Albarado could attend the National DARE conference last month in Atlanta, where he received training on the new curriculum.
“It wasn’t expected, and greatly appreciated,” Albarado said.
Lauren Evans, WISC Regional Sustainable Development Coordinator, explained, upon receiving donation requests, the company looks and see if it falls under one of the three P’s – people, plan and prosperity. If it does, “and it’s a great fit, we are glad to help,” she said.
“If we prosper, we want the community to prosper,” she continued.
In 2011, WISC donated $125,000 in the surrounding region. This year, that figure has already been surpassed.
The new curriculum, Albarado said, will focus on Social, Emotional and Learning issues, with bullying and peer pressure as secondary topics.
“The DARE program is so structured and consistent,” he explained. “I could go into a different country and they would be teaching the same curriculum.”
