Milwaukee native Smyczek wins first match at U.S. Open

-- Milwaukee native Tim Smyczek won his first-round match yesterday at the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

NEW YORK CITY - Milwaukee native Tim Smyczek won his first-round match yesterday at the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

He eliminated fellow American Bobby Reynolds in five sets split by a rain delay. The 24-year-old Smyczek won 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He’ll face 17th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan in the second round.

Smyczek was the 179th-ranked qualifier for the U-S Open. The player he defeated yesterday, Reynolds was ranked 151st – and Reynolds was 5-1 against Smyczek in previous tournaments.
