MADISON - Three men face possible charges of substantial battery, after being arrested yesterday for the August first attack on Wisconsin running back Montee Ball.
The three suspects are all 21-year-old UW-Madison students – Deonte Wilson, Wendell Venerable, and Robert Wilks. There was no word on when charges would be filed, or when the three would appear in court. Authorities said Ball was assaulted by five men on a campus street, four days after two of his Badger teammates got into a fight at a house party. Police say they’re still on working on leads involving other suspects – but they did not say if any more arrests are imminent. Madison Police are still investigating the house party, but media reports say the two players could get non-criminal citations for disorderly conduct.
Ball has said he was at the party, but was not involved in the fight – and Madison Police have said there’s no evidence that he was involved in any way. Police did not say whether the three men arrested yesterday were also part of the fight. Ball – a finalist for the Heisman Trophy last year – suffered a concussion and a bruised jaw in the attack. He missed the first week of the Badgers’ preseason camp, but he’s expected to play on Saturday when Wisconsin hosts Northern Iowa in their season opener.
