EFD extinguishes burning bales

By Bill Kirk

Hot temperatures and even hotter hay were challenges for the Ellsworth Fire Department Thursday.

Fire fighters were called to the Joseph J. Jr. and Lynette F. Traynor property, W2801 230th Ave., in the Town of Salem at 1:45 p.m. for a round bale blaze. The burning bales in a corn field threatened some nearby structures, but the EFD managed to contain the damage to a row of them. Combustion build-up inside the bales may have contributed to the fire.

The thermometer reading was in the low 90s at the time the department was on the scene, just north of a curve on 230th and before a dead end, west of CTH CC.
