Sunday State Sports Briefs: Packer season begins today

GREEEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers took varying approaches to getting ready for the NFL season.
Green Bay defenders couldn’t stop opponents in 2011, despite rolling to a 15-1 record. The Packers rode an explosive offense, led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, before a 37-20 loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Last May’s NFL draft was aimed at shoring up that defense. The 49ers also had a strong record last season, 13-3, but the team felt it needed to improve its offense. That’s why several new faces were added on that side of the ball. This afternoon’s season opener will show if the two division-winners accomplished their goals. Kickoff at Lambeau Field at at 3:25 p.m. Central Time.
