Spence marks 35 years with Special Olympics

It was 1977 and the former Pierce Development Center was still operating at the Seyforth Building on the local fairgrounds.

Kathy Spence, who was a staffer there at the time, started the Special Olympics program as part of this center for the developmentally disabled. The program continued under that arrangement until 1980, then in 1981 became a community organization run by volunteers.

Today, Spence is agency manager here, a title she gained sometime during her three-and-a-half decades with Special Olympics, she said Wednesday.
