Minnesota Sports Briefs: Vikes move on from loss, get ready for 49ers
The Minnesota Vikings returned to Winter Park yesterday following their 23-20 loss at Indianapolis on Sunday.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - The Minnesota Vikings returned to Winter Park yesterday following their 23-20 loss at Indianapolis on Sunday.
Head coach Leslie Frazier addressed the media and stated the team is relatively healthy following the defeat. He added that Brian Robison, Erin Henderson and Percy Harvin are all fine following minor injuries during the game. Minnesota is back on the practice field tomorrow in preparation for Sunday's home game against 2-0 San Francisco.

The NFL is making its case against Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma. NFL.com reports Vilma was presented with a sworn affidavit from former New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams during his meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The affidavit reportedly says Vilma offered ten-thousand-dollars to any teammate who knocked then-Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the 2010 NFC Championship Game.

The Atlanta Falcons held off Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 27-21 on Monday Night Football. Manning was intercepted three times in the first quarter and finished 24-of-37 for 241 yards and a touchdown. Cold Spring native Eric Decker caught four passes for 53 yards for the Broncos. The former University of Minnesota star has nine catches in two games this season.

In an effort to sell out its last non-conference home football game of the season, the University of Minnesota is offering ten-dollar tickets to Saturday's game. Syracuse is the opponent for the 3-0 Golden Gophers. Saturday's game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at TCF Stadium. The Gophers open Big Ten on the road at Iowa a week from Saturday. The NSIC and MIAC have named their weekly award winners in football. Minnesota-Duluth senior quarterback Chase Vogler of Rosemount threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's win over Concordia-St. Paul. That has earned him the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Minnesota State-Mankato junior defensive end Chris Schaudt of Slater, Iowa is the Defensive Player of the Week. Sioux Falls kicker Braden Wieking is the league's Special Teams Player of the Week. In the MIAC, Augsburg quarterback Ayrton Scott of Minneapolis is the Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 283 passing yards and a game-winning touchdown against Gustavus Adolphus. Concordia-Moorhead senior linebacker Peter Hvidston of Fargo is the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week. The league's special teams honoree is Augsburg's Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane of Bloomington, who returned a kick 82-yards for a touchdown.

The Minnesota Twins were off yesterday and will begin a three-game series in Cleveland tonight. The first-place White Sox swept the Twins in three straight games at Target Field over the weekend. Cleveland rallied to beat Detroit on Sunday. The Indians are off yesterday, as well.

The Houston Astros have apologized for offering fans the chance to meet pitcher Joe Niekro during a luncheon next weekend. The team said Niekro's name was mistakenly put on an ad for the luncheon. Niekro died in 2006. Niekro pitched for the Twins in 1987 and 1988.

Drought conditions around the state will likely have an impact on waterfowl hunters this season The lack of rain has created extremely low water conditions in many shallow lakes and wetland basins that are popular for hunters. However, The DNR's Steve Cordts says the duck numbers are looking good right now and hunters can have increased success in dry years such as this. The season starts Saturday (Sept. 22nd).

Southern Minnesota got some much needed rain earlier today, but there has been no new moisture in the BWCAW where fires continue to burn. The largest fire is just north of the Canadian border at Emerald Lake and it's affecting the air along the Gunflint Trail. Becca Manlove from the U.S. Forest Service says the fire is 525 acres but so far there have been no injuries or structures burned. Otherwise, crews continue putting out smaller fires in the area -- and are being helped by the cooler, calmer air.
