ATLANTA - Madison golfer Steve Stricker will receive one of the PGA Tour’s highest honors tonight. He’ll be given the annual Payne Stewart Award. It goes to the player who best exemplifies respect for the game, a commitment to charity, and a professional attitude toward himself and the sport.

The honor is named after Stewart, a PGA pro who died in a 1999 plane crash. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson, Tom Watson, Davis Love III, and Gary Player have won the honor in the past. Stricker says he’s humbled – and he does not feel like he should be put in that category. Stricker will accept the honor at a banquet in Atlanta, where the final tournament of the PGA Playoffs begins on Thursday. He’ll receive a sculpture and a $100,000 grant for a charity of his choice. Stricker says he’ll use the money to start his own foundation, along with what he makes in the upcoming Ryder Cup, plus a corporate gift that he cannot disclose yet.

The 45-year-old Stricker is a 12-time PGA Tour winner. He’s one of just three golfers to advance to the Tour Championship in the six years the Fed-Ex Cup Playoffs have been staged. Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan are the others.
