MANKATO, Minn. - The number-two ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team nearly opened the season with an upset defeat.
A goal by Katy Josephs with 49 seconds left tied the score at 2-2 in Mankato, Minnesota. Minnesota State had finished in the basement of the WCHA last season.
Junior goaltender Danielle Butters made 41 saves for the home team. Four other Badger shots hit the posts. Wisconsin did earn the extra point by winning the shootout 3-2.
