CHICAGO - The United States enters the second day of Ryder Cup competition with a 5-3 lead.

This year matches are being played at Medinah Country Club. The only losses came when Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker dropped an alternate-shot match to Justin Rose and Ian Poulter of England, 2-and-1, then also lost a best-ball match to England’s Lee Westwood and Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, 1-up. Colsaerts was playing in his first Ryder Cup match, but he had eight birdies and an eagle.

Weather shouldn’t be a factor when the Wisconsin Badgers open Big Ten play at Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium tonight. Clear skies and temperatures in the mid-60s are expected. Both teams bring 3-1 records into the contest and Nebraska is favored to win its fourth. Wisconsin will try to rediscover the powerful offense which has taken the field in recent years. The Badgers have struggled to score this season. Meanwhile, the Cornhuskers hit the home turf wanting some revenge for last year’s humbling introduced to the team’s new conference. Wisconsin won that game 48-17. Even though he missed the entire second half last week, running back Montee Ball is expected to be ready to go for UW. He shredded the Husker defense for four touchdowns in last year’s rout. This is Wisconsin’s first visit to Lincoln in 39 years.

When the New Orleans Saints and the Packers take the field Sunday, they will bring with them a surprising 1-5 combined record. Two of the most powerful offenses in the NFL have struggled to score points. If the Packers offense had been performing as it has in recent seasons, the end-game disappointment wouldn’t have been a factor against the Seahawks last time out. The replacement officials are gone and the pros are back. Both contenders are hoping their performance is back to normal, too – before it’s too late and the season is lost.
