And after Friday’s Middle Border Conference loss to Osceola, Ellsworth needs to win its final two games in order to reach the regional playoffs.
“We play everybody close,” said Panthers head coach Clair Austin. “But we can’t seem to win.”
The Chieftains got on the board first when running back Michael Gaglio punched in a 1-yard scoring run for the 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Panthers tied the game up when Jake Murphy connected with Alex Campbell for an eight-yard touchdown pass, followed by a Brady Degross extra point.
Tied at halftime, a big play by the Osceola offense proved to be the difference maker, as Trevor Carlson hit Hunter Gasper for a 31-yard touchdown pass for the game-winning score.
Murphy finished 8 of 18 passing for 117 yards and two interceptions for the Panthers, and Dennis Schutz had five catches for 103 yards in the loss.
Ellsworth (2-4, 2-3 Middle Border) looks to keep its postseason hopes alive next Friday at home against Prescott.
