Minnesota Sports Briefs: Lynx play Game 3 tonight

-- The defending WNBA champion Lynx will host the Seattle Storm in the decisive Game Three of their Western Conference semifinal series tonight at the Target Center.

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The defending WNBA champion Lynx will host the Seattle Storm in the decisive Game Three of their Western Conference semifinal series tonight at the Target Center.

Seattle forced the extra game with an 86-79 double-overtime win in Game Two on Sunday. Tip-off this evening is at 8 p.m.

The Minnesota Timberwolves held their annual media day to opening up training camp yesterday. The Wolves will hold their first practice of camp in Mankato at noon today with a second workout set for later in the afternoon. Minnesota opens preseason play a week from tomorrow.

The Bulls have given head coach Tom Thibodeau a four-year contract extension. Thibodeau is entering his third season as Bulls head coach. He has compiled a 112-and-36 record with two Central Division titles in his first two seasons with Chicago. Thibodeau was once a Timberwolves assistant coach.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier met with the media yesterday, saying it's great to be in first place in the NFC North at the end of the first quarter of the season. The 3-1 Vikings will host the 1-3 Titans on Sunday.

Titans starting quarterback Jake Locker isn't expected to play on Sunday when they take on the Vikings in Minnesota. Locker injured his non-throwing shoulder in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Texans. He was replaced by backup Matt Hasselbeck, who completed 17-of-25 passes for 193 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Both INTs were returned for TDs. On the season, Locker has completed 63-percent of his passes for 781 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Chicago's Charles Tillman and Lance Briggs returned interceptions for touchdowns as the Bears blasted the Cowboys 34-18 last night in Monday Night Football. Jay Cutler threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears, who improved to 3-1. Brandon Marshall had seven catches for 138 yards and a score in the win. The Bears visit the Jaguars on Sunday.

The Northern Sun has named its weekly award winners in football. St. Cloud State junior quarterback Phillip Klaphake of Princeton is the Offensive Player of the Week after firing five touchdown strikes in a Huskies win over nationally-ranked Minnesota-Duluth. Minot State junior defensive back Jeff Buchert of Plainfield, Connecticut is the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Sioux Falls senior kicker Braden Wieking is the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week.

The MIAC Football Players of the Week have been announced. St. Olaf senior quarterback Dan Dobson of Mankato is the league's Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Oles to a win over Saint John's. He fired five scoring passes. Bethel linebacker Seth Mathis of Anoka was named the MIAC Defensive Player of the week after picking off two passes and making 15 tackles in a win over Augsburg. Saint John's junior return man Jake Essler of New London won the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week after taking a punt back for a touchdown in a loss to St. Olaf

The National Lacrosse League's Minnesota Swarm made league history last night at the annual NLL Entry Draft. The Swarm acquired three of the top four picks in the 2012 draft and used them to stockpile some talent. Minnesota drafted Ohio State's Brock Sorensen with the second overall pick, Robert Morris forward Kiel Matisz with the No. 3 overall selection, and Limestone College forward Shayne Jackson with the fourth pick. Minnesota also used a first round choice to nab RIT defenseman Alex Crepinsek with the tenth overall selection.

The University of Minnesota soccer team dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 8 Penn State Sunday afternoon. Whitney Church scored the game-winning goal for the Nittany Lions with a header on a corner kick early in the second half. Taylor Uhl had one goal and one assist in a losing effort for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota hosts Iowa Sunday in the first of three straight games at Elizabeth Robbie Stadium.
