Saturday State Sports Briefs: UW women's hockey team explodes for seven goals in win

Wisconsin Sports
-- For a few minutes it looked like the No, 3 ranked University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team could taste its first defeat. Then, the Badgers scored seven goals in a row. Wisconsin’s 7-2 victory Friday night over Lindenwood spoiled the home opener for the Lions.

ST. LOUIS - For a few minutes it looked like the No, 3 ranked University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team could taste its first defeat. Then, the Badgers scored seven goals in a row. Wisconsin’s 7-2 victory Friday night over Lindenwood spoiled the home opener for the Lions.

Senior Brianna Decker led the way for Wisconsin with the eighth hat trick of her Badger career. A loud home crowd energized Lindenwood and helped the Lions score twice in the first four minutes. Decker capitalized on a turnover for Wisconsin’s first goal and Kelly Jaminski tied it at 2-2. All that scoring came in a wild first period. The last five goals came off four power plays and a penalty shot as the Badgers improved their record to 2-0-1. Junior Alex Rigsby had 20 saves for Wisconsin. The series wraps up this afternoon at 2 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin football team is unbeaten at 3-0 in home games and has yet to win on the road. That’s bad news for Illinois, which visits Camp Randall Stadium this afternoon. It’s the second Big Ten Conference game for both teams, with both trying to bounce back from losses. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. Central time. Both the Badgers and Illini bring struggling offenses into the game. That’s a bigger surprise for Wisconsin than Illinois. The Badgers have won six of the last seven meetings between the two schools. Wisconsin’s record is 3-2 coming into the game, while Illinois is 2-3.

Rhinelander native Dan Forsman shot an even par 72 in the first round of the SAS Championship. That score is good for a tie for 39th in the field of about 80. Forsman stands six shots behind the leader, Russ Cochran, who had a six under par 66. At the Justin Timberlake-Shriners Hospital Open in Las Vegas, Madison golfer Jerry Kelly missed the cut, even though he finished the second round three shots under par.
