Sunday State News Briefs: House fire kills six-year old boy in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee authorities say a babysitter may have left food unattended on a stove, starting a house fire that left a six year old boy dead.

The babysitter and three other children managed to get out safely. The fire apparently started in one house and jumped to a nearby house as well. Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after 3:15 a.m. yesterday. The boy’s body was found on the second floor. The cause of the fire is said to be still under investigation.

An 18 year old man from Rothschild is scheduled to make a court appearance tomorrow on charges including threats to injure, carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. Wausau West High School went on lockdown for about an hour last Friday when a female student reported she had received a threatening text message from the teenage suspect. He was not a student at the school. The girl notified a school administrator and Wausau police formed a perimeter around the school in less than a half-hour. The suspect was caught carrying a loaded handgun nearby.

Governor Scott Walker will host a summit for small business owners next month in La Crosse. Walker will be joined by Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch and state agencies which are involved in job creation. Small business owners, entrepreneurs and innovators can start registering now by going online to www.wheda.com. Walker says the goal of the summit is to improve the relationship Wisconsin small business operators have with state government. Members of Walker’s cabinet will attend. The first such summit was held last year in Green Bay. The deadline to register for the gathering at the La Crosse Center is November 1st.

Demolition starts tomorrow on the building which was the home for The Stein, a popular downtown Green Bay restaurant. The family-owned business opened at 126 South Adams Street in 1961. It closed for the final time in 2008. The owner says the space will be used for a downtown parking lot. The Stein was popular because it was located across the street from the Brown County Circuit Court. It was famous for its Reuben sandwiches.

Cheese lovers came from as far away as Minneapolis to sample 40 year old cheddar cheese yesterday at a tasting held at Wisconsin Cheese Mart in Milwaukee. The store’s owner had bought 10 pounds from Z’s Cheese Shoppe in Oconto. The owner at Z’s, Edward Zahn, found the cheese in a walk-in cooler earlier this year. Zahn says it had been overlooked – unintentionally – for years. McNulty was selling the aged cheese for 10 dollars an ounce and he says he was sold out in the first half hour.
