GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packers’ running back Cedric Benson will reportedly be out for at least 6-to-8 weeks – and perhaps for the rest of the season.
Head Coach Mike McCarthy said yesterday afternoon that he was still waiting for medical information about the left foot injury Benson suffered in Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis. But last night, ESPN said Benson suffered a Lisfranc fracture in the middle of the foot. New York Jets’ receiver Santonio Holmes recently went out for the season with the same injury, and Houston quarterback Matt Schaub missed 12 games last year with a Lisfranc injury. It generally means that at least one joint which connects the front-and-back of the foot is displaced. Surgery may be needed if the injury is severe enough – but the options are not known yet in Benson’s case.
He had 71 carries in five games this season for 248 yards and a touchdown. Running back James Starks is due back any time after his turf-toe injury in the pre-season. Otherwise, second-year pro Alex Green could start at tailback on Sunday night at Houston. Packers’ running back Brandon Saine could also be in the mix. He has not played yet this season.
Meanwhile, coach McCarthy says Packers’ tight end Jermichael Finley and nose tackle B.J. Raji both have a chance to play against the Texans. Finley injured a shoulder at Indianapolis, and Raji sprained his left ankle.
