The number of students attending public schools in the Ellsworth Community School District is seven more than last year, reported Superintendent Barry Cain Monday night.
District administrators had expected a decline of 26 students and were pleasantly surprised at the increase, said Cain, calling this “a very positive trend.”
This year the district’s overall student count was 1,649 for the third Friday in September, an official count day, said Cain.
Since third-Friday counts influence the amount of state funding the district will get next year, this is good news for Ellsworth, he said.
Cain said the district saw many new students enrolling in June, July and especially August.
He said the most significant increase was at Hillcrest Elementary, which had 299 students last year and has 345 now.
In a funding-related matter, the board agreed to meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 to finalize the 2012-2013 budget. The district will receive information regarding equalized valuations, its revenue limit and amount of general state aid on Oct. 15, said Cain.
