3M plans to build a large addition to an existing manufacturing building at its facility along the Mississippi River in the south of Cottage Grove.
The company last week received Cottage Grove City Council approval for a needed variance for the 89-foot-high, 93,500-square-foot addition to Building 112. The variance was required, city planners said, because the company’s plans exceed the city’s 60-foot standard for maximum building height.
The city’s Planning Commission recommended approval of the plan last month. 3M told the city construction on the addition would begin in 2013.
3M spokesman Donna Fleming Runyon said the company might break ground on the project yet this fall and expects the addition to be completed and operational by 2015. Citing business competition, she declined to say specifically what the addition will be used for.
“(It’s) one of our core businesses,” she said.
The company will be adding jobs as a result of the project, but it is not yet clear how many employees will be added.
“It’s a positive development,” Fleming Runyon said. “It’s a further investment. It’s always nice when you can grow in the area.”
