Saturday State Sports Briefs: New arena can't solve UW's scoring woes

MADISON - The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team didn’t want to open its new home this way. The Badgers failed to score for the third game in a row, dropping the first contest held in the new LaBahn Arena on the Madison campus 1-0.

Bemidji State scored at the 4:34 mark of the final period to take the victory. A miscommunication left goalie Alex Rigsby caught behind the net without a stick, opening the way for the visitors.

A sell-out crowd of two thousand, 273 witnessed what was also the 500th game in the program’s history. The Badgers outshot Bemidji State 27-23, but failed to score on three power plays and saw their record drop to 3-3-1 on the season, 1-3-1 in the WCHA. Game two of the series is tomorrow at 2 p.m. at LaBahn Arena.

The Green Bay Packers will be relying on their depth when they take on the St. Louis Rams tomorrow. General manager Ted Thompson used his first six draft picks on defensive players coming into this year. The game at the Edward Jones Dome may give an early indication how successful those choices were. Four defensive starters are missing the game, linebacker D.J. Smith, linebacker Nick Perry, cornerback Sam Shields and defensive tackle B.J. Raji. Among the replacement starters is rookie cornerback Casey Hayward who has three interceptions in the last two games. Brad Jones figures to pick up most of the snaps when Smith would have been on the field and Erik Walden will likely take over for Perry. Playing without Raji, the Green Bay defense still stopped the Texans running game cold last time out.
