Gopher men stunned by Tech, women win easily

The University of Minnesota men's hockey probably won't enjoy their No. 1 ranking for very long as Michigan Tech stunned the Golden Gophers 5-3 Friday evening.

The U's women's team won easily over Ohio State Friday 7-2.

The Petillas, Blake and Chad, both scored goals for Tech as they led 3-1 after the first period and 5-2 after the second at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in front of a crowd of 3,410. The Gophers' starting goaltender Michael Shibrowski was pulled after the first period for Adam Wilcox who went for the dursation of the game. Both combined for 21 saves. Tech goalie Phoenix Copley stopped 28 of Minnesota's 31 shots, which led the game. Scoring goals for Minnesota were Nick Bjugstad, Nate Schmidt and Travis Boyd. Game 2 is tonight in Houghton starting at 6 p.m. (CST)

Meanwhile, the No. 1 ranked U women's team hardly skipped a beat as they built up a 4-0 lead in the first period and led 6-1 in the second over the Buckeyes in front of nearly a thousand fans at Ridder Arena. Hannah Brandt scored twice and had two assists, Amanda Kessel had a goal and three assists and getting two assists each were Mira Jaluso and Maryanne Menefee. Minnesota goalie Noora Raty made 15 saves. The series finals is set for today at 1: 05 p.m.
