COCHRANE-FOUNTAIN CITY - The Plum City High School volleyball team was one-point away from losing its WIAA Division 4 regional tournament championship game to Cochrane-Fountain City Saturday evening. But the Blue Devils rallied to beat the Pirates in the decisive fifth game and win its first title since 2006.
Down 14-11 in Game 5, PC rallied behind the severing of senior Shelby Kannel and the hitting of senior Marah Boyer. It was the strong play of the Blue Devils seniors class, especially in serving, which helped PC win Games 1 and 2 by scores of 26-24, 25-17 before the defending champion Pirates came back themselves to win Games 3 and 4 by scores of 25-16 and 27-25.
Other PC seniors include Amber Unser and Heather Von Holtum, who both served well in leading the Devils to the first two game wins, setter Ashlie Miller and Angie Craighton.
C-FC led Game 5 by a 5-0 score and and led 14-11 before a kill by Boyer gave Plum City the serve back to which Kannel and Boyer teamed up to score five straight points.
The win snaps a long losing streak to Pirates as Plum City fell to C-FC in the regional finals last year and in the semifinals the year before. The Pirates saw their three-year reign as regional champs ended.
Plum City will travel to Brookwood Thursday for the sectional semifinal match against No. 7 ranked Hillsboro. The Tigers were an easy 3-0 winner over New Lisbon in their regional final. The match begins at 7 p.m. The winner plays in the sectional final Saturday at North Crawford.
