EAU CLAIRE - A prosecutor said yesterday that an Eau Claire police officer was quote, “fully justified” in shooting a Wausau man to death on October fifth. Eau Claire County District Attorney Brian Wright issued his finding after he reviewed the incidents which led to the death of 24-year-old Christian Peterson.
Authorities said they tried to stop Peterson, because he failed to return to the Marathon County Jail in Wausau on September 20th when he was supposed to. A state trooper followed him to a restaurant parking lot, where he hit four vehicles. He later struck another vehicle and injured its driver, and then entered a home and forced the owner to give up his SUV – which police stopped later for going the wrong way.
Peterson then ran into a Culver’s parking lot, tried to hijack a truck at a drive through, and confronted Eau Claire city officer Jason Ruppert who then shot him. The DA said Ruppert and the other officers quote, “acted with extreme courage and bravery.”
