Saturday State Sports Briefs: Brewers deny rumors about signing Hamilton

MILWAUKEE - Don’t expect to see Josh Hamilton in a Brewers uniform next year. The very day cyber-rumors were swirling about Milwaukee being in the mix for the power-hitting outfielder from Texas, the idea started falling apart.
Team owner Mark Attanasio points out Milwaukee led the league in home runs and runs scored, so offense isn’t a problem. He says the focus will be on fixing the bullpen after 29 blown saves and 33 losses. General Manager Doug Melvin said he didn’t think the team would be involved in big-ticket free agents when he gave his end-of-the-season news conference. In addition to the bullpen, the Brewers would also like to add an experienced starting pitcher to what could be a pretty young rotation.

Both teams are looking for a little revenge at Camp Randall Stadium this afternoon as Michigan State comes to Madison for Homecoming. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. The Wisconsin Badgers are still smarting from the last-second loss to Michigan State, 37-31, during the regular season. The Spartans want to make up for the even closer 42-39 defeat in the Big Ten Championship game. The big battle will feature the best run defense in the conference against the suddenly rejuvenated Badger ground game. With Montee Ball and James White looking unstoppable the last two weeks, Wisconsin looks to run its Big Ten record to 4-1.

The lineups will look different on both sides of the ball when the Green Bay Packers take on Jacksonville tomorrow. Both the Pack and the Jaguars are dealing with major injury problems not yet halfway through the season. Thirteen Green Bay players won’t be in uniform against the 1-5 Jaguars. Added to the injury list is wide receiver Jordy Nelson who is questionable with a hamstring injury he suffered in practice last week. The Packers will bring a 4-3 record into the 12 noon start at Lambeau Field.

The National Hockey League announced the cancellation of its 2012-13 regular- season schedule for the entire month of November on Friday. The move comes one week after games through Nov. 1 were excised, and eight days after the league rejected three separate proposals presented by the NHLPA. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman submitted a six-year offer to the NHLPA on Oct. 16, one that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and allowed for a full 82- game season to begin on Nov. 2. The league's self-imposed deadline for the players' union to accept that proposal expired on Thursday.
