MADISON - The University of Wisconsin football team has a big decision to make this week, even though there’s no game on Saturday. The coaches will determine whether junior transfer Danny O’Brien or fifth-year senior Curt Phillips should start the Badgers’ next game on November 10th at Indiana.
UW head coach Bret Bielema confirmed yesterday that freshman starter Joel Stave has a broken collarbone, and will most likely miss the rest of the season. There’s a chance that Stave could return for a bowl game, but Bielema says he doubts it.
O’Brien opened the year as the Badgers’ starter – but Stave replaced him after two-and-a-half games due to a large number of turnovers. Stave started the next six games before he got hurt last Saturday in Wisconsin’s loss to Michigan State. O’Brien completed 5-of-11 passes for 44 yards in relief of Stave. He was sacked three times, but Bielema said O’Brien did make some plays – and it was arguably his best game for the Badgers against the Big Ten’s best defense. Phillips has had some mop-up playing time this year, after he came back from his third ACL injury to his right knee during his time at Madison.
The Big Ten said yesterday that the Badger-Indiana game would start at 11 a.m. on November 10th in Bloomington. ABC or the ESPN networks will televise it.
