It appears that Milwaukee Brewers’ reliever Jose Veras is on the way out. MLB.Com says the Brewers have told Veras they’ll release him outright from the 40-man roster. The right-hander must clear waivers for that to happen – and his agent, Bryce Dixon, tells MLB.com that Veras will become a free agent if he’s cleared. Veras is up for salary arbitration this winter – and MLB Trade Rumors says he can expect a $600,000 raise to around two-point-six-million for next season. Veras was traded from Pittsburgh a year ago, in a deal that sent Casey McGehee to the Pirates. He went 5-and-4 this year with a three-point-six-three ERA, with 40 walks and 79 strikeouts in 67 innings.

Instead of running the offense from the floor, University of Wisconsin point guard Josh Gasser says he’s prepared to lead from the bench instead. The junior Gasser is out for the season, after he tore an ACL ligament in his left knee at practice last Saturday. He’ll have surgery next Tuesday. And after that, Gasser says he’ll settle into a non-playing leadership role which will have him being a mentor and a volunteer assistant coach. Gasser insists the Badgers won’t miss a beat while he recovers. He says he has total confidence in Ben Brust, Traevon Jackson, and George Marshall to fill his spot at the point. But Gasser says it’s quote, “killing me” not to have the chance to play with his established teammates this season. He says he has especially made great relationships with seniors Mike Bruesewitz, Ryan Evans, and Jared Berggren. And he was excited to help them reach their goals – which he’ll have to do verbally instead of physically on the court.
