PRESCOTT--Mary Kelly has heard a variety of statements during her time as a Drug Court Coordinator for Wabasha County (Minn.) and now Pierce County.
The following is one of many that stuck out to her as she explained drug court to Prescott Kiwanis Thursday.
“Why are you treating me like a 12-year-old?” Kelly recalled, for those beginning the program.
She explained her answer: “Because that’s where they are emotionally and I know what they are doing at all times. We are constantly checking them…Eventually, in the phase, we have to have them give up and say, ‘Fine, I’ll do what you need me to do’.”
The Pierce County Drug Court is a three-phase program for adults who have pled guilty to one or more drug or alcohol crimes. It is designed as an alternative to incarceration. Kelly said she has heard from more than one participant drug court is harder than jail.
