Minnesota Sports Briefs: NHL labor negotiations continue
Minnesota Sports-- Labor negotiations between the NHL and the players association continued at an undisclosed location in New York on Wednesday. The discussions came a day after seven hours of talks on Tuesday.
(New York, NY) -- Labor negotiations between the NHL and the players association continued at an undisclosed location in New York on Wednesday.
The discussions came a day after seven hours of talks on Tuesday.
The NHL locked out the players when the collective bargaining agreement expired on September 15th. Games through November have already been canceled. The annual Winter Classic on January 1st has also been wiped out. Minnesota was scheduled to play tonight in New York against the Rangers.

The Houston Aeros begin a rough stretch in their schedule tonight with a game against Toronto. The Aeros play their next four games over six days. Houston also plays its next six games spanning 11 days. The Aeros are the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.

Three WCHA women's hockey players have been honored this week for their play over the weekend. Minnesota junior forward Amanda Kessel of Madison, Wisconsin is this week's WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and assisting on three others in the Gophers' sweep of Minnesota-Duluth. Her teammate Hannah Brandt of Vadnais Heights is this week's WCHA Rookie of the Week. She had two assists in both Gopher wins. Wisconsin junior goaltender Alex Rigsby of Delafield, Wisconsin is the league's Defensive Player of the Week.

Authorities in Duluth are investigating what caused high levels of carbon monoxide which resulted in evacuations last night at a local hockey arena. Firefighters and emergency responders were called to Fryberger Arena after complains of headaches and nausea in the crowd and among several players. One person was taken to the emergency room while others were checked at the scene. Officials think either a propane-powered zamboni or aging heating and water heating systems are to blame.

University of Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill says his team must play disciplined defense this weekend when it takes on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Illinois has a mobile quarterback in Nathan Scheelhaase, who Kill says will beat you with his legs if defenders don't stay in their assigned pass-rushing lanes. Minnesota is 5-4 and needs a win to get to bowl eligibility. Illinois is 2-7 overall and is winless in Big Ten play. Kickoff on Saturday is 2:30 p.m.

All three teams that won Minnesota State High School volleyball titles last year are returning to the state tourney this year with the hopes of repeating as champion. The 2012 State Volleyball Tournament is set to begin this morning at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Eden Prairie is looking to defend its Class 3A championship, Marshall is looking to repeat in Class 2A, while Bethlehem Academy of Faribault is the returning Class 1A title team. The event starts today with the championship bouts set for Saturday. Here is Thursday's schedule of state quarterfinal games in St. Paul:

(St. Paul, MN) -- As projected, it's looking like this year's deer harvest is going to be down from last year. The D-N-R's Lou Cornicelli says last year around 192-thousand deer were taken. This year, it's expected around 180-thousand deer will be harvested. He says it's lower then what we have seen in the last decade, but still above the average over the last 30 or 40 years. He says last weekend the buck harvest was up eight-and-a-half-percent over last year and the doe harvest was down 20-percent.
