The men's college basketball season begins across the country this evening. The Minnesota men's team will be at home to face American University. Tip-off at Williams Arena will be at 7 p.m. The Gophers won both of their exhibition games, while American was 1-and-0 in the preseason.
If the Golden Gopher football team wins tomorrow at Illinois it will have to do it without two of the club's top pass catchers. A.J. Barker of St. Paul and Derrick Engel of Chaska have both been ruled out of the contest because of injury. Minnesota needs a win to gain bowl eligibility. The Gophers are 5-and-4 overall and 1-and-4 in the Big Ten. Illinois is 2-and-7 overall and 0-and-5 in the Big Ten. In fact, the Fighting Illini has not won a Big Ten Conference game since October of 2011, a span totaling 11 straight conference defeats. Kickoff tomorrow is set for 2:30 p.m.
A key NFC North tussle takes place Sunday as the Lions face the Vikings at the Metrodome. Minnesota has dropped three of its last four, including back-to-back setbacks to the Buccaneers and Seahawks to fall to 5-and-4. The Vikings defeated the Lions 20-13 in Week Four. Meanwhile, Detroit has overcome a shaky start to the season to get to 4-and-4 and at least become part of the playoff picture. Kickoff on Sunday is set for noon.
Several Lions are in danger of not playing in Sunday's game at Minnesota because of injuries. Cornerback Chris Houston, safety Louis Delmas, receiver Titus Young and defensive linemen Corey Williams and Cliff Avril missed practice on Thursday because of injuries. Meanwhile, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has been named the NFL's dirtiest player again. According to the "Sporting News'" mid-season player poll, 32 of the 103 players polled named Suh. Detroit plays at Minnesota on Sunday.
