It wasn’t a pretty season opener and it took some time, but the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay pulled out a 72-67 win over Chicago State at home last night at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The Phoenix hit 41-of-48 free throws in the mistake-filled contest, helping them overcome 30 turnovers. Chicago State added 27 miscues. Kiefer Sykes spent a big portion of the night at the charity stripe, hitting 17-of-19 on the way to a 31-point performance. He also had seven rebounds. The Cougars started fast, jumping out to a 13-1 lead, which shrunk to three – 33-30 – at half. They still led by four with about five minutes to go, but Green Bay closed on an 11-2 run.
