MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men’s basketball team beat Colgate at home yesterday, 84-63.

It was the Golden Eagles’ season opener, after their matchup against Ohio State was canceled on Friday night due to heavy floor condensation aboard the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in Charleston, South Carolina.

Marquette was up by 11 at the half. And the Eagles out-scored the Raiders by 10 in the second half, despite being out-rebounded for the game 39-34. The Eagles had 14 rebounds, something coach Buzz Williams said he was pleased with. Marquette out-shot the Raiders 48-to-39 percent. And Colgate committed 18 turnovers, to just eight for the Golden Eagles. Jamil Wilson led Marquette with 15 points. Chris Otule had 11 points in his first game for the Eagles in 11 months, after he had knee surgery. Senior Murphy Burnatowski scored a career-high 24 points with 12 rebounds for Colgate, which fell to 0-2. Marquette has now won 12 straight regular season openers. They’ll host Southeastern Louisiana tomorrow night.

The University of Wisconsin men's team crushed Southeastern Louisiana 87-to-47 in their season opener yesterday in Madison. Badgers’ forward Mike Bruesewitz – who was not expected to return until Wednesday night at Florida – had 10 points in 13 minutes after coming off surgery for a serious lower right leg cut. The senior Bruesewitz went 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He also added three rebounds. Wisconsin scored the first 19 points of the game and cruised from there. Jared Berggren led the 23rd-ranked Badgers with 19 points, and Ben Brust added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Southeastern Louisiana did not score for the first seven minutes and 21 seconds. Dre Evans led the Louisiana school with 13 points, and Roosevelt Johnson had nine. Before the game, the Badgers said junior forward Duje Dukan will sit out the season with a red-shirt. He missed a month of preseason conditioning, after he came down with mononucleosis in September.

A two-time All-State player from Ohio has given his verbal commitment to play for the Wisconsin men next season. 6-7 forward Nigel Hayes becomes the fifth known recruit for Bo Ryan’s Class-of-2013. Hayes averaged 14 points a game in his junior season at Whitmer High School in Toledo. He was reported to be one of the Badgers’ top priorities. Hayes chose the Badgers over Ohio State, Minnesota, and Stanford. Hayes can put his commitment in writing as early as Wednesday, which is the first signing day for high school seniors.

The UW-Milwaukee men blew a 17-point lead in the second half yesterday, and they lost at South Carolina in overtime 82-75 at the Frank McGuire Coliseum in Columbia. Mindaugus Kacinas forced the OT by making 2-of-3 free throws in the final minute of regulation. Brenton Williams then sealed the win for the Gamecocks by scoring 12-of-his-14 points in the extra session. South Carolina went in front for good by scoring the first four points of the OT – and they gave their new coach Frank Martin his first win. Martin joined South Carolina after five seasons at Kansas State. Jordan Aaron scored 28 points for UW-Milwaukee. And he made seven of the Panthers’ 14 three-pointers. UWM only made 9-of-19 from the free-throw line. They’re now 1-and-1, and will host Davidson on Saturday.

The Wisconsin women won their season opener over UW-Milwaukee, 74-56 last night in Madison. The Badgers were up by four at the break – and they opened the second half with a 7-0 run, and led by as many as 22 later on. Milwaukee shot just 32-percent in the second half. The Badgers controlled the boards 44-31. Taylor Wurtz led Wisconsin with 16 points, and Anne Marie had her first double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Ashley Green scored a career-high 19 points for UW-Milwaukee, which fell to 1-1. The Panthers will host Western Michigan on Wednesday night. The Badgers’ next game is on Friday night at Gonzaga.
