State Sports Roundup: UW-Oshkosh, St. Norbert qualified for the D3 football playoffs

UW-Oshkosh and Saint Norbert are among the 32 teams named last night to the NCAA Division III football playoffs.

And as expected, three-time defending national champion UW-Whitewater did not make the field, after losing three games this season – including WIAC defeats in successive weeks to league champion Oshkosh and Stevens Point.

Oshkosh will host Saint Scholastica of Duluth in the first round on Saturday, while Saint Norbert will play at Saint Thomas of Saint Paul. Saint Norbert won the automatic playoff bid from the Midwest Conference, by beating Lake Forest 20-10 on Saturday. Both the Green Knights and Foresters shared the Midwest crown at, both at 8-1 in league play. Oshkosh remains at Number-five in the final D3football.com poll of the regular season at 10-0. UW-Platteville, which finished at 8-2, is ranked 13th despite the lack of a playoff berth. Whitewater received enough votes to be 11 places out of the Top-25. Mount Union still leads the poll at 10-0.

Matt Kenseth of Cambridge is mathematically-eliminated from the NASCAR Sprint Cup season championship with one race left. Kenseth is sixth in the Chase standings, after he finished 14th yesterday in the Advo-Care-500 at Phoenix. Brad Keselowski moved into the lead for the season title, after Jimmie Johnson fell to second as the result of a wreck yesterday. Keselowski needs to finish 15th-or-better in next weekend’s finale near Miami in order to win the Sprint Cup title. Kevin Harvick won yesterday’s race. Paul Menard of Eau Claire took ninth, and he remains 16th in the Sprint Cup standings going into next weekend’s finale. Beloit-born Danica Patrick placed 17th yesterday, and Travis Kvapil of Janesville was 20th.

It appears that Madison golfer Jerry Kelly will have to cash in a one-time career exemption if he wants to stay on the PGA Tour full-time next year. Kelly finished 126th on the Tour’s money list – just one place below the threshold for a full ride next year – after he tied for ninth place in the season’s final event yesterday. Kelly shot a six-under-par 66 in his final round yesterday to finish at 11-under-277 at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at Lake Buena Vista Florida. Charlie Beljan won the tournament at 16-under-272. Kelly made 645-thousand-701 dollars this year. Kevin Chappell beat out Kelly for the 125th spot on the money list, at 647-thousand-510 dollars.
