ct:On Nov. 3, fifth grader Anna Mercord of Malone Elementary School in Prescott won the 55th Annual State Conservation Awareness Speaking Contest in Wisconsin Rapids. It was sponsored by the Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation Association. Mercord competed in the Elementary Division (grades 5 and 6) with five other students from around the state. Mercord shared her award-winning speech with the Malone staff during their Inservice Day on Nov. 5, and was then presented with a corsage from the staff. As a tradition in Prescott, all state champions are paraded around town in a Prescott fire truck. So, Mercord was picked up by Fire Chief Bill Dravis from her home Nov. 6, paraded around Prescott, and then brought to school, where all staff and students applauded her arrival.
