Not only was it the first basketball game of the season for the Ellsworth High School boys' team but the first varsity contest for new head coach Rich Powers Tuesday evening. All were successful together as EHS topped St. Croix Central 43-35 at Ellsworth.
Ellsworth was impressive on defense throughout almost all of the game, holding SCC to 10 or less in points for three quarters. They kept Central from scoring more than just one field goal in the second quarter and kept the visitors from scoring a single point in the third quarter until the 3:29 mark. By that time Ellsworth had a 28-12 lead.
"Our success this season is going to depend on our defense and we're going to have to play it with hardcore intensity and aggressiveness." Powers said.
Only a late run in the fourth quarter made the score closer in appearance. Central cut Ellsworth's lead to eight but the Purple made enough at the free-throw line (8-for-12) to keep St. Croix from getting any closer.
Ellsworth's Chrystian Kulow led all scorers with 19 points. EHS's Tyler Marson and Derrick Swanson each had seven points.
Ellsworth is next in action next Tuesday at home again vs. New Richmond in their Middle Border Conference debut.
