Friday State Sports Briefs: WIAA crowns state champions in football finals
Wisconsin Sports-- It was a day of champions at the WIAA State Football Finals at Camp Randall Stadium and more championships will be given out today.

Amherst closed out an undefeated season with a 19-7 win over previously-unbeaten Lancaster. Backup quarterback Caleb Glennon threw a pair of touchdown passes while filling in for a player who was injured last week.
Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs won its second straight Division-Six crown, 24-to-14 over Eau Claire Regis. A seven-yard scoring pass to Ryan Grandlic put Springs in front for good late in the first half.
The Division 3 title game begins at 10 this morning at Camp Randall Stadium, as undefeated Waupaca plays Waukesha Catholic Memorial. At one, defending Division 2 champ Waunakee goes for another title against Mequon Homestead. And a pair of unbeaten will play for the Division 1 state championship, as Hartland Arrowhead takes on Sun Prairie at four this afternoon.

Green Bay Packers’ corner Sam Shields might have to miss Sunday’s game at Detroit. He ran full-speed at practice yesterday for the first time since he injured a shin on October 14th at Houston. Recently, Shields said he felt more pain downward to the ankle – and he believes he has a high-ankle sprain. Coach Mike McCarthy says Shields needs to get back on the practice field and put his foot through its paces. Shields has not been ruled out for Sunday’s contest. The coach says a lot will depend on how he feels today. If he doesn’t go, rookie Casey Hayward will get another start.
Meanwhile, receiver Jordy Nelson took part in his second straight practice yesterday – and he said he felt good. Nelson is coming off a sprained ankle suffered 12 days ago against Arizona. Tight end Andrew Quarless sat out yesterday, after he practiced yesterday while coming off a torn knee from last season. Running back Johnny White missed practice due to illness.

At 4-5, the Detroit Lions’ playoff chances are not hopeless. But the Lions say they need a jump-start. And they hope that three straight home games at Ford Field will do the trick, starting on Sunday against the Packers. A year ago, the Lions made the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. And they played exciting football at home, while firing up a crowd that was so loud, it forced a number of false-start penalties against opponents. This year, Detroit has trailed at halftime in all but one of their nine games – but they’ve waged more than their share of second-half comebacks. Quarterback Matthew Stafford says the Lions never feel they’re out of a game. As a result, Detroit is only a game-and-a-half away from the NFC’s final Wild Card spot which is now held by Minnesota and Seattle. Detroit fans have not seen much of their team in person. Only three of the Lions’ nine games have been at home. But they’ll play five-of-their-last-seven regular season contests under the dome at Ford Field. And they’ve got some tough opponents – including Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and Indianapolis at home, and the Packers at both home and on the road.

The UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team will play three games in Reno Nevada this weekend. The Phoenix are in their first regular season tournament in two years, the World Vision Classic. They’ll play Southern Utah tonight, the host Nevada tomorrow, and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. Green Bay won its season opener last weekend over Chicago State. Sophomore Keifer Sykes scored a career-high 31 points in that game – and he set a new Green Bay school record with 17 free throws. The Phoenix also set a team record by hitting 41 free throws. Also tonight, the University of Wisconsin women play at Gonzaga.

Five University of Wisconsin men’s basketball recruits signed letters-of-intent this week to join the Badgers in 2013. Three of them are guards – Bronson Koenig of La Crosse Aquinas, Riley Dearring of Minnetonka Minnesota, and Jordan Hill of Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. The Badgers also signed forwards Nigel Hayes, the three-time Ohio MVP from Toledo, and Vitto Brown of Bowling Green, Ohio. Head Coach Bo Ryan announced the recruiting class yesterday.

The Marquette University women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet-16, by beating Princeton 3-1 yesterday in a second round match in Provo, Utah. Taylor Madigan broke a 1-1 tie by scoring the deciding goal in the 53rd minute. The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles trailed for the first time since September, when Lauren Lazo scored Princeton’s only goal in the 11th minute. Mady Vicker and Ally Miller also scored for Marquette, which improved to 18-2-2. The Eagles will play top-seeded Brigham Young tomorrow night. BYU made the Sweet-16 with a 1-0 victory over Auburn.
