MINNEAPOLIS - Michael Mensch scored both goals as the university of Wisconsin men’s hockey team tied Minnesota 2-2 yesterday in front of over 10,000 fans at Mariucci Arena Friday.
Mensch’s sixth goal of the season came at 5:06 of the second period. That cut the Gopher lead in half after the home team had scored the first goals of the first two periods, one by Zach Budish just three minutes in and the other by Erik Haula, assisted by Budish. Haula also had an assist.
Badger sophomore goalie Landon Peterson withstood a barrage of 40 shots in the game in his first start. The Badgers were outshot 42-25 but killed off two five-minute major penalties and saw two players, Joe LaBate and Tyler Barnes, tossed due to game misconducts. Gopher goalie Adam Wilcox finished with 23 saves.
The tie gives Wisconsin a 1-4-2 record, including 1-2-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition. Minnesota is 6-2-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the WCHA. Tonight's game between the two border rivals begins at 8 p.m. at Mariucci Arena.
