Sunday State Sports Briefs: Bucks continue winning ways

Ellis and Brandon Jennings both scored 22 points for Milwaukee. At six wins and two losses, the Bucks are off to their best start in 11 seasons. The top pick in this year’s NBA draft, Anthony Davis, scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Ryan Anderson added 20. Consecutive three-point plays by Davis cut the Milwaukee lead to two, 110-108, with two minutes left. A fall-away jumper from 20 feet by Ellis doubled the lead. Seconds later he matched another Hornet score and two free throws by Jennings iced the win with 12 seconds to go. Milwaukee scored at least 60 points in the first half for the third straight game.

A three-pointer with two seconds showing on the clock gave Nevada a 71-69 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at the World Vision Classic in Reno last night. Alec Brown had connected on a three-pointer to give the Phoenix a late-game lead, just before the winner by Deonte Burton. Burton led the Wolf Pack with 19 points. The Phoenix absorbed their first loss in three games despite having four players score in double figures. Brennan Cougill and Kam Cerroni led Green Bay with 16 points apiece.

Jordan Aaron led all scorers with 23 points, but it was seven points by Kyle Kelm in the final two and a half minutes which led the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a 73-68 win over Davidson. Milwaukee was down by a point at halftime, then the teams traded buckets most of the second half. Kelm’s three-point shot gave the Panthers a 63-62 lead with 2:32 remaining. Milwaukee did a lot of its damage from the free throw line where they connected on 24-of-32 shots.

A 3-1 victory at Value City Arena in Columbus yesterday gave Ohio State a split with its weekend series against the Wisconsin women’s hockey team. Ohio State’s defense kept the visiting Badgers from getting many close shots. The only Wisconsin score came at 16:45 in the third period when Alev Kelter knocked it home. The Buckeyes had built a 3-0 lead before Kelter’s goal. Alex Rigsby made 30 saves for the Badgers. Ohio State was outshot by Wisconsin 34-33.

The Green Bay Packers go for their fifth win in a row on the road at Detroit today. The game kicks off at noon Central time at Ford Field, the home of the Lions. Green Bay has won 11 of 12 starts against Detroit under current head coach Mike McCarthy. The Packers are in second place in the NFC Central Division, trailing Chicago by a single game in the standings at 6-3. Detroit is 4-5. Though Detroit plays five of its final seven games on its home turf, the Packers are the first of several tough opponents the Lions will face. The Lions lead the NFL with 307 passing yards per game.
