County Board passes 2013 budget; property taxes to go up

The budget for 2013 was approved during the Pierce County Board of Supervisors’ meeting Tuesday without debate or discussion.
The tax levy was set at $16,004,953, an increase of .769 percent over last year. Nearly 84 percent ($13.4 million) of the levy will go toward personnel and operating expenses, with the rest split between the contingency and debt service funds and equipment improvements.
Taxpayers will notice an increase on their bills as well. Homeowners of a $200,000 house will see a $44 increase due to the net new construction, while it will be $22 for $100,000 homeowners.
The sheriff’s and highway departments will be the top two recipients of levy funds, with the sheriff’s department receiving 35.74 percent and the highway department 20.55 percent. Rounding out the top five are human services, general government (clerk, treasurer, administration, register of deeds, corporation counsel, etc.) and the court system (DA, circuit court, register in probate).
