MADISON - University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema says it will help his team’s recruiting efforts by having more Big Ten schools in the East – where they’ve picked up some big-time players in recent years.

Yesterday, Maryland said it would leave the ACC and join the Big Ten in 2014 – and today, Rutgers is expected to do the same. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany would not discuss the Rutgers situation when he announced Maryland’s move yesterday. He also said the league’s athletic directors would talk next year about re-aligning the two football divisions. But ESPN said both Maryland and Rutgers would join Wisconsin in the Leaders’ Division – and once that happens, Illinois would move to the Legends’ Division.

Ironically, Wisconsin had scheduled a home-and-home series against Maryland in 2020-and-’21. Bielema said the purpose was to provide more exposure to the Badgers in the East, to help their recruiting efforts there. Three of Wisconsin’s top running backs all came from East Coast schools in recent years – Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne, P.J. Hill, and Anthony Davis.
