Minnesota Sports Roundup: Gagliardi retires as St. John's football coach after 60 years

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The winningest coach in college football history is calling it a career. St. John's head coach John Gagliardi announced yesterday that he's retiring following a 5-and-5 regular season. The 86-year-old has coached the Tommies for six decades and racked up a record 489 victories. St. John's won the Division III N-C-A-A championship in 1963, 1965, 1976 and 2003 and was runner-up in 2000. Gagliardi coached two of his grandsons this season. The legendary coach admits that he might have coached a few more seasons if the team's record had been better in recent seasons.

Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin missed Monday's practice with a sprained left ankle. He suffered the injury Week Nine against the Seahawks. He missed the Lions game in Week 10 and Minnesota had a bye last week. Head coach Leslie Frazier says he is hopeful Harvin will play this weekend when the Vikings take on the Bears on Sunday.

U of M football coach Jerry Kill says he wishes A-J Barker would have talked to him before quitting the team Sunday. The Gophers' leading receiver posted an online letter on Sunday, accusing Kill of being "a master manipulator" who ridiculed him to the point of not wanting to play for Minnesota anymore. Kill says he doesn't treat his players any differently than he treats his daughters -- and when he needs to be tough, he can get tough on them. Kill says Barker had an on-field confrontation with a trainer last Thursday and he told him not to talk to an adult or someone of authority in that tone of voice. Kill claims he did not say anything negative about Barker's family, as Barker alleges in his on-line letter.
