SPRING VALLEY - A 22-game losing streak came to a quick end as the Spring Valley High School girls basketball team topped Alma/Pepin Tuesday 44-32 to begin the 2012-13 season with a win.

This is the first season for the Cardinals under new head coach Brady Hoolihan and it got off to a great start as SV held A/P scoreless through the entire second quarter while scoring 19 points themselves. The 24 points Valley had at halftime was more than they had scored in entire games over the past few seasons.

The Cards' Nevada Schlegel scored 20 points and had a double-double adding in the rebounds. Spring Valley dominated the boards and was able to score in transition off of breaking Alma/Pepin's press.

"We were able to play with a confident, relaxed style which negated the press because we weren't panicking and making the turnovers," Hoolihan said. "We were able to get the ball up the floor and we could score from there or if we didn't make shots we were certainly able to rebound."

Both freshman Becky Fesenmaier and Emily Boisen each had six points for Valley. Ali Murray led the Eagles with 19 points.
