Preseason wrestling rankings have Ellsworth No. 2, SVE No. 9
The high school wrestling season begins next week and two Pierce County teams are ranked with the state's best going into it.
The high school wrestling season begins next week and two Pierce County teams are ranked with the state's best going into it.
Ellsworth will enter the season at No. 2 in Division 2 while Spring Valley/Elmwood goes in at No. 9 in Division 3 as ranked by Crossface Magazine.
The Panthers finished runner-ups at the state team tournament last March to the preseason No. 1 squad, Luxemburg-Casco.
Spring Valley/Elmwood, also runner-ups at the state team tournament in Division 3 comes in just ahead of Dunn-St. Croix Conference rival Boyceville. Lancaster is the top team in the Division 3 poll.
Wausau West is ranked the top team in the state in Division 1
Ellsworth's first dual meet is on Thursday at Somerset to begin Middle Border Conference action as well. The Panthers host the Ellsworth Invitational on Saturday. SVE will be at home Thursday to take on Unity in a non-conference dual meet. The Redbirds will be at the Dick Shiels Invitational in Faribault, Minn. the following Saturday.
Prescott also begins its season Thursday at home vs. New Richmond. They too will be competing in the Ellsworth Invitational Saturday.
