DNR getting ready to sue Chippewa tribe for hunting deer at night

Wisconsin News
-- The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission has authorized Chippewa tribal hunters to hunt deer at night in most of the northern one-third of Wisconsin.

The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission has authorized Chippewa tribal hunters to hunt deer at night in most of the northern one-third of Wisconsin.

Each of the six Chippewa tribes in Wisconsin must approve the plan before members can participate. The Department of Natural Resources prohibits night-time deer hunting, saying the practice is too dangerous. The DNR plans to file a federal lawsuit, saying it doesn’t feel the commission has the authority to allow the hunting a deer at night.

The approval is yet another conflict between the tribes and the state. The Chippewa were already angered by the current wolf hunting season in Wisconsin, because the tribes consider wolves as sacred to their culture.
